The Origin of Split Rock – from Evelyn Sabrowsky
The area of Wisconsin which became part of Fairbanks Township in Shawano County has its origin in the year 1875. At that time the Chicago & Northwestern railroad built its line through the woods to provide an outlet for logs and lumber products. A bit to the north of the tracks lay a large rock about 50 feet wide which had a split about 1 inch wide. Since then the split has widened to two feet. Split Rock was a natural name given to this railroad stop. When the village of Split Rock was in its prime, it consisted of twenty log homes, six framed houses, a large store, dance hall, potato warehouse, depot, hotel and tavern, a blacksmith shop, and church.
