The 1926 Shawano County Fair Poster

At the historical society we have many, many posters that were used for adversiting the Shawano County Fair.  This 1926 poster is one of our favorites.

The first Shawano-Oconto County fair was held in Oconto County in 1873.   In 1874, the fair was moved to Shawano County and was first held on Wian’s farm north of the city.  In 1876, after purchase of the Naber property, it was moved to it’s current location on Green Bay Street.  Each year advertisements went up announcing to the public, the fair dates and activities.

The 1926 poster uses artwork from Bertram Dorien Basabe.  Born in 1868, he was an artist who lived in the United Kingdom and United States and is known as an illustrator in the early 1900’s where his paintings were mostly used for calendar art.  Much of his work was produced by Joseph Hoover and Sons Calendar Company as well as the American Art Works Company all as calendar prints.
