Shawano’s Tonsorial Parlors
A tonsorial parlor is an inner sanctum where a man can receive the highest level of barbering services in a setting that compliments this ancient art.
Sometimes the word “tonsorial” is used to refer to barber shop services. The term, “tonsorial” is derived from the Latin noun “tonsor” which means clipper and the verb tondere meaning to shear.
Paul Kopeschke was a barber and barbershop manager in Shawano for many years. There were many barbershops in downtown Shawano and over the years and Mr. Kopeschke, a master barber, worked in several; Murdock House, Boehm’s, and others as well as operating his own shop on Main Street.
Mr. Kopeschke was born in Manitowoc in 1895 and died in Shawano in 1971. Shown in the photographs are Mr. Kopeschke “barbering” in various tonsorial parlors in Shawano.
