Bonduel’s C&NW Train Depot
It wasn’t until 1905 that the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad came through the township with its depot located west of Bonduel. As it was quite a distance from Bonduel, a hotel called the Northwestern Hotel was built nearby. Crew members from the Chicago Northwestern Railway Company found lodging at this hotel as did the many traveling salesmen who called on merchants in Bonduel.
Mr. Fred Benter, a carpenter for the C. N. W. RY Co., constructed the depot. Fred Benter was born July 18, 1868 in Theresa, Dodge County, Wisconsin. Soon after his confirmation, he left home and took on the trade of a carpenter. In 1894 he married Anna Burmeister and soon after, they moved to Marshfield, Wisconsin where he lived until 1904, when he moved to Bonduel. Fred and Anna were the parents of Arthur, Erwin, Esther (Mrs. Wm. Pautz), Clara, Laura, Ernest, Emma, (Mrs. John Kasten). Other well known structures built by Fred in this area were the Bonduel park pavilion and the Hunters’ Haus at N4096 Cty. Tk K in the town of Waukechon.
