Shawano County Railroad Depots
Railroads played a large role in the development of the United States from the Industrial Revolution in the Northeast to the settlement of the West. Before the 1950’s and the rise of the automobile people and freight traveled by railroad. This was also the case in Wisconsin and Shawano County where we had two railroads; the Chicago & North Western and the Soo Line.
During the heyday of railroading, almost ever city, town, and village had a railroad depot for freight and passenger traffic. Shown in the photos are some of the depots in cities and towns you might recognize in Shawano County. Just imagine what we would have today if we kept our railroads for passenger traffic.
