1897 – Court House Square
Shawano, Wisconsin
Photos of the day from 1897….from court house square in Shawano, Wisconsin.
The first two photos shows the second court house and jail in Shawano which were built in 1883 at a cost of $17, 000 by J. L. Whitehouse. C. D. Wescott helped in planning and building.
The third photo is taken at the SW corner of Courthouse Square. The four men, left to right are; Byron Garfield (holding a rifle), Jim George (seated on the ground with his hand on a deer’s antler), Dr Johnson (leaning on a rifle’s barrel), Guy George with his hand on “Old Sam, Deer Hound.”
The hand written note on back states “George was Sheriff 1897 – 1898. Picture taken where jail is now or court house square. Charles Tourtillott was…not in picture.”
